Yesterday, two classes of seventh grade students visited the Cape Elizabeth Town Hall as part of an interdisciplinary unit on coastal flooding and sea level rise in Cape Elizabeth. Students rotated through four different departments to learn about their general responsibilities and relation to coastal flooding, but also learned about the career paths of the presenters, including Matthew Sturgis, Town Manager, Maureen O’Meara, Town Planner, Marcia Weeks, Business Manager, Chris Record, Superintendent, and Michelle McClellan, Assistant Superintendent.
Students researched and prepared questions ahead of time and also worked on transferable life skills such as professional demeanor and communication skills. The visit provided excellent context as students further explore coastal flooding and its impact on town planning and resource management. This Pathways effort connects students to relevant learning experiences and community members.
