On Tuesday, October 29th, CEMS students participated in the 2024 Maine Student Mock Elections, a program administered by the Secretary of State's office every four years. At CEMS, this year's event was entirely run by the 8th grade class (with a little help from their teachers) as they tried to create a "free and fair" voting system for all.
On Mock Election Day, after learning from their Social Studies teachers about the voting process, every student at CEMS was provided with a copy of two election ballots (replicas of the Maine ballots): one for President, US Senator, and US Representative and one for Ballot Measure 5. Students then voted in the privacy of four voting stations (built by Mr. Price) and submitted their ballots into secure voting boxes, which the 8th graders then carefully tabulated. There was quite a bit of excitement in our hallways as students voted, collected their "I Voted" stickers, and waited to hear the election results on the next day.
At CEMS, 410 students participated in the voting with Kamala Harris (79%), Angus King, and Chellie Pingree winning their respective races. The Pine Tree Flag won overwhelming support from students with 79% of their votes. The statewide results of the Mock Elections will be reported in the media later this week.
